My Journey Into Hoops

Hi, I’m Blu Ben and I build custom LED hula hoops. I love music and people and a few years ago I attended a String Cheese Incident show and they had just begun to allow hula hoops in to the festival again. Later, I partied at Burning Man and was amazed at how LEDs covered everything and illuminated the night. The combination of good music and a carnival atmosphere sparked the perfect marriage in my mind and MyHoopMaker.com was born. Well, almost born, as I still had to figure out how to build them. A while passed, and I knew that if I didn’t act soon, hula hoopers everywhere would have to hang up their hoops as the sun set in the evening. So in 2009 I contacted a specialty LED company in Boise, Idaho. They offered me expert training and access to near limitless supplies. I went through a “mad scientist” period where I didn’t shave or shower, and would stalk the streets of Boise at night, muttering mathematical formulas, and seeing phantom hoops dancing on every street corner. It all paid off when I had my “eureka” moment and brought the first LED hoop into the world. I celebrated with my sponsors, formed a business partnership, and started lighting up the night. Unfortunately, our partnership wasn’t meant to last, and they cut me out of the process. Soon after, the business folded. It was a hard period in my life, because I knew that without my LED hula hoops, the dark of the night was winning once more. I found myself rationalizing the need to shower and pacing the moon lit streets of Boise. One morning, I woke up on the pavement between two parked cars, covered in vomit and LEDs, like a smelly Christmas tree. I knew that something had to change and as I raised my head, I saw a bumper sticker on one of the cars that read “Keep Portland Weird”. Since then I’ve relocated to Portland and re-ignighted the LED hula hoop crusade. My business is named MyHoopMaker, because every hoop I make, I make for YOU and is custom designed for what YOU want. Our world is beautiful and you are beautiful and I want you to look your best as you hoop beneath a warm summer sky. Please contact me by phone of email and we will make it happen.
